Princess

This is Princess, my ugly dachshund. I saw her chained to a tree going to work one Manitoba winter morning. She was living on snow and a torn bag of dog food in below zero weather. At the time I had close to 50 dachshunds, including puppies! I certainly did not need another dog, much less a doberman! She just looked so sad and forlorn that I had to make enquires about her. It turns out she was a 3 year old bitch who had belonged to an elderly gentleman who doted on her. When he suddenly died, his wife sold the house to a local farmer who was planning to retire within the next while and moved into a condo in Winnipeg. The dog stayed with the house but the farmer was not planning to move in for at least six months when his son got married and took over his dairy operation. Poor Princess was like a ship without an anchor. Spoiled in the lap of luxury one day and destitute the next. It turns out that she was pedigreed and had been shown a few times but had eventually been spayed and become a beloved companion to an old man. I remember thinking I ought to have my head examined but figured she could not do any worse at my house at least until I could find her a new home. Princess thought she died and went to heaven. She was a bright, extremely affectionate and gentle girl who never caused me a bit of grief. She loved to just sit by my side with her head in my lap and look lovingly up at me. A gentle stroke on her ears was all she ever asked and was obedient and tried to please me at every turn. Totally different from a dachshund! She died at the advanced age of 14. I still miss my 'ugly' dachshund to this day. She was a wonderful companion.
